Webber Naturals goes beyond standard requirements, by using mass spectrometry (mass spec) – the most accurate detection technology, along with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC), thin layer chromatography (TLC), and other sophisticated techniques designed to help isolate and quantify a variety of molecules and compounds. We also do allergen, microbial, GMO, and radiation testing.

We are the only natural supplement company using such a wide range of highly sophisticated scientific testing methodologies. This helps us exceed international standards, and set new ones for nutritional products.

Organic, non-GMO farming in the Okanagan Valley

We currently have hundreds of acres of organic farmland in the beautiful Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, Canada, where we grow, harvest, and process our non-GMO, organically grown herbs and plants. Plants are harvested by hand when their active constituents are at their peak, and processed immediately at our own local facilities.

Whether our herb and plant extracts come from our own farms or from trusted sources around the globe, Webber Naturals guarantees the highest standards of quality, purity, and potency. How? By controlling every step from seed to shelf and by leading the industry in quality control technology, including GMO testing of materials we don’t grow ourselves.

Setting, meeting, and exceeding standards

Our products, practices, and quality control meet or exceed United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards, as well as the regulations of the Canadian Natural and Non-prescription Health Products Directorate (NNHPD) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) which are some of the most stringent in the world. Our manufacturing facilities, processes, and systems conform to all the requirements of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP/cGMP) set out by the FDA and NNHPD. All our labs follow Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) guidelines.

Each and every ingredient is tested for identity, purity, heavy metals, pesticides, and other contaminants. Some of our technology can detect as many as 160,000 different compounds! We go above and beyond NNHPD, FDA, and USP standards. Our laboratories also test finished products for contaminants and impurities, as well as conducting numerous physical and potency-related tests such as disintegration, dissolution, weight variation, allergens, microbial contamination, heavy metals, radiation, and pesticides. The entire process is thoroughly documented and meticulous records are maintained.

In-house testing facilities and on-staff chemists, microbiologists, and laboratory technicians ensure that accurate test results can be obtained quickly and efficiently using an array of industry-leading techniques, such as:

    • High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with mass spec
    • Gas chromatography (GC) with mass spec
    • Ion chromatography with mass spec
    • Inductively coupled plasma mass spec (ICP-MS)
    • Real-time polymerase chain reaction (QPCR) – for GMO testing
    • Peroxide value testing
    • Halogenation testing
    • Molecular distillation (for removing impurities)
    • Microbiological testing

Mass spectrometry (mass spec) is an incredibly sensitive detection technique. While it is not required by Health Canada or the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), Webber Naturals has invested in a wide range of very valuable testing equipment to add yet another layer of safety and ensure that all raw materials used to create our products are pure and free of contamination. In fact, we are currently the only supplement manufacturer with four mass spec testing machines, testing for thousands of potential compounds, the most vigorous testing in the world. Here are just a few examples of contaminants that can be detected and identified:

        • Newer classes of pesticides
        • Mycotoxins
        • Veterinary drugs and antibiotics
        • Plasticizers such as phthalates
        • Heavy metals (e.g., arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury) and radioactive isotopes, at parts per billion (ppb) levels of detection
        • Over 140 types of insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides at ppb levels
        • Solvent residues at limits as low as 0.1 parts per million (ppm)

GMO screening

The demand for non-GMO (genetically modified organism) products continues to grow in Canada and around the world. We use sophisticated testing to detect GMO ingredients. We literally work at the DNA level to detect GMOs in even the smallest samples. Webber naturals performs this genetic testing using what is called “polymerase chain reaction” testing or PCR. PCR is the most sensitive and reliable test method available for GMO screening. It is so effective that it can detect extremely low GMO concentrations in a wide range of materials even after they have been processed. Any materials that contain GMOs are rejected.

Sensitive lipid screening

Fish oils and other healthy fats (e.g., flax oil) are fragile. Peroxide value tests are performed to ensure the oil is stable and not rancid. A halogenation test further verifies the safety and stability of nutritional oils. Using these and other tests, we can ensure that Webber Naturals customers receive the highest quality omega oils possible. Only safe, stable oil will provide therapeutic benefit. For some of the oils (e.g., fish), our suppliers use a processing method known as molecular distillation to remove impurities including heavy metals like mercury, and toxic organic compounds such as dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Oils are subjected to specialized testing at outside laboratories for PCBs and dioxins.

Radiation Testing

We understand the importance of clean, pure ocean water, not only as a source for our marine products, but also as a habitat for wild Alaskan salmon. Each and every harvest is screened using radiation testing conducted by the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC), the most advanced radioactive testing lab in Canada. The SRC monitors each harvest at the lowest possible radiation detection settings – for the highest standard available.

Microbiological Testing

Webber Naturals has our own in-house facilities for microbiological testing, done to detect the presence of harmful pathogenic microbes. Tests are done for total aerobic count, yeast and mold, Escherichia coli (E. coli), Salmonella species, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Microbiological testing is done on both the raw material and finished product.
