Ginger root has been used as a traditional remedy in many cultures for thousands of years. This popular rhizome has been clinically shown to help prevent nausea and vomiting due to motion and/or seasickness. It is traditionally used in herbal medicine to help relieve digestive upset including lack of appetite, nausea, digestive spasms, indigestion, dyspepsia, and flatulent colic. Ginger is also used as an expectorant and antitussive to help relieve bronchitis, coughs, and colds.

Ginger contains high levels of phenols and volatile oils that are responsible for the positive effects this root has on digestive health. These active constituents help stimulate digestion, enhance nutrient absorption, and relieve flatulence. Ginger is an excellent carminative, promoting the elimination of intestinal gas, and an intestinal spasmolytic, relaxing and soothing the intestinal tract. Research indicates that ginger’s active ingredients also have mild anti-inflammatory properties that may be helpful for joint pain associated with osteoarthritis.
